The Pig Trend in Pop Culture #15: rocking fabulous pearls http://bit.ly/11jGMYw
When Grace Vanderbilt, the Grand dame of New York society, sold her mansion on the corner of 52nd and Fifth Avenue in 1916 and moved further up Fifth to the ‘country’ (85th Street), fellow socialite Maisie Plant knew she must follow suit. She promptly put her mansion on Fifth & 52nd on the market for $1.2 million. The same price as the world's most expensive strand of natural pearls which Cartier had recently sent all over Europe to be exhibited. When they returned home, all of NY's upper crust turned out to ogle them. And Maisie decided since she was moving anyways, she'd offer Cartier her crib in exchange for the bling.
(Following a Depression, War & the introduction of cultured pearls, the strand later sold at auction in 1957 for $170,000. Oops.)
This pig in pearls & heart-tinted sunnies has a distinctly Janis Joplin'esque vibe, which I found quite charming for some reason.
