The Pig Trend in Pop Culture #5: Cincinnati's flying pig statues http://bit.ly/VmeQyh
"The sheer magnitude and the sustained magnitude of the controversy," reminisces sculptor Andrew Leicester, designer of these flying pig sculptures which welcome visitors to the waterfront part & which managed to sparked a civic tempest of pretty epic proportions, given it was some public statues being tempested about. “What was rather interesting in terms of the subject was that it wasn't about gun control, race, religion or morality. It was about this kind of undefinable thing — people's notion of what represents them."
(In the 19th century, the Ohio city's prevalent meatpacking industry had critics dubbing the joint "Porkopolis", which prompted Cincinnati enthusiasts to add some wings & adopt as a symbol of civic pride.)
Citizens turned out en masse, hand-lettered signs & petitions at the ready, and the city council finally agreed to let these pigs fly.
