Brandon McCarthy remains on the Cubs' radar, as I've been saying for a long time. He was headed toward a big
contract before suffering a fractured skull on a line drive back to the mound, but the prognosis for a complete recovery is good. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle writes that the Cubs and White Sox are among the teams that will show interest in McCarthy when he hits the free agent market next week. He started out in the White Sox organization, of course, working as a rookie fifth starter down the stretch in 2005 and then out of the bullpen in '06 before being traded to Texas for John Danks. It's hard for me to imagine the Sox making a play for McCarthy after their deals to keep Jake Peavy and Gavin Floyd. The A's want to re-sign McCarthy but it's unclear if they will bid heavily to keep him.
