A Chicago native is getting a chance to come home. Brian Bogusevic has signed a minor-league deal with the Cubs.
Bogusevic, formally of the Astros, is an Oak Lawn native who played at De La Salle before going to Tulane. The Astros took him in the first round of the 2005 draft as a left-handed pitcher but he has since converted to the outfield, playing 104 games in right last year for Houston. His bat never developed the way the Astros had hoped, as a .656 OPS in 618 big-league plate appearances attests. He hit .203 with seven homers and 15 stolen bases last year. The Cubs signed three others to minor-league deals that were reported by Baseball America today: infielder Alberto Gonzalez, catcher J.C. Boscan and right fielder Johermyn Chavez.
