Starlin Castro strained his left hamstring running out a ball today in Mesa, and will miss
a significant stretch of time. The early call was day to day but with Opening Day more than four weeks away there's no reason to push him to come back quick. Castro had hit a grounder to shortstop Dee Gordon and pulled up down the line after Gordon threw wildly to first base. The injury figures to be a good thing for prospect Javier Baez, who will join fellow non-roster guys Edwin Maysonet, Brent Lillibridge and possibly Alberto Gonzalez in filling in for Castro. Logan Watkins could also get some time there but is viewed as more of a second baseman. Castro had appeared in improved shape. Perhaps he did a little too much getting ready for camp.
