The Indians are bargain hunting this offseason
The IPI's Jim Pete takes a look Kevin Youkilis, Jason Bay, and Melky Cabrera, three of the free agent options on the market that the Indians have been mostly tied to in the early going this offseason.
As of now, there are only two teams that appear interested in Bay, and that’s Boston and Cleveland. Bay says that he wants a familiar setting, so the Terry Francona-led Indians would seem to be a fit in that regard, so it’s a possibility that Bay could end up with the Indians. Youkilis has been able to drive up the price for the simple fact that there just aren’t many third base options out there. The Indians wouldn’t be looking at Youkilis for their third base slot, but he does give them an amazing amount of flexibility as he would become the primary first baseman and could also get time at third base and designated hitter. Cabrera is not the perfect option as he doesn’t provide the Indians with a power stick that they covet. He’s also not the “right-handed hitter” that they need, although he is a switch hitter.
