Timing of Willis McGahee's release means he won't receive potential $500,000 injury protection benefit. Details:
The Broncos weren't worried about paying the half-mil because they know McGahee is going to play somewhere this season -- maybe inside AFC West with either #Chargers or #Raiders. Still, the team followed protocol for player who finished previous season on injured reserve. When McGahee returned for the Broncos’ mandatory minicamp arrived this week, he first passed his physical so he could be cleared for workouts. He then fully participated in two minicamp practices.
Had the Broncos released McGahee before he showed he was healthy, the player may have been entitled to a $500,000 injury protection benefit.
To be clear Broncos released McGahee because John Elway and John Fox are convinced Ronnie Hillman-Montee Ball can be their RB tandem. But the timing of release was team doing its due financial deligence.
