Five-star PF Chris Walker, committed to the #Gators, is not academically eligible to enroll at UF this fall. For...
the last few months, there has been no expectation that he would be academically eligible, and the coaching staff was resigned to the fact that the best chance to get him on campus would be for the spring semester, beginning in the middle of December. As OnlyGators.com reported in mid-July (and earlier) [ http://bit.ly/1drmCxn ], Walker’s standardized test scores and GPA were not up to snuff. He spent the summer re-taking those tests and enrolled in online classes in order to improve his grades and eventually become eligible. There was a chance, an incredibly slim and unlikely one, that he would be able to qualify for the fall.
The “breaking news” you are seeing today has nothing to do with a change in Walker’s status but rather that "drop/add" is over for the fall semester at UF and, therefore, no additional opportunities exist for him (or any other students) to enroll prior to December -- not that he was going to be qualified to do so anyway. Again, the team had no expectation that Walker would qualify for the fall.
Walker has not been ruled "ineligible" by the NCAA and is certainly not ineligible for the "year" or season. He still has the opportunity to enroll in December if he meets the established academic standards. The expectation at this time is that he will meet those standards and be able to contribute to the Gators from that point forward. However, he is still in the process of working to improve his grades.
