That story on Tom Coughlin's possible finale includes this hypothetical look at who might someday replace him ...
John Mara acknowledged he has a “short list” of potential replacements for Tom Coughlin, just in case he decides to retire soon. Who’s on the list? No one but Mara knows, but since the Giants have only hired one coach in the last 30 years who wasn’t previously a Giants assistant (Dan Reeves), it’s a good bet it has some familiar names.

But here is one hypothetical, just-for-fun shortlist:
Bill Cowher – Is he done coaching or just waiting for the giants job? He’s got a resume that would command instant respect.
Mike Sullivan – A respected former coughlin assistant with a military background, something the Giants love, and he swears by the Coughlin way of running things.
Steve Spagnuolo – Beloved former Giants defensive coordinator, who struggled as coach of the Rams and as Saints defensive coordinator, but would be popular choice among players and fans.
Perry Fewell – It would take a big rebound of his 31st-ranked defense, but has great respect in the coaching community and interim experience with Buffalo (2009).
Nick Saban -- He’d never leave Alabama? Right, just like he’d never leave LSU until the Dolphins called in 2005. Was a failure in his first foray into the NFL (with Miami), but Bill Belichick was too.
