This "new" @carmeloanthony is not only refocused, but, apparently, he's been re-branded. We explain here: #fb
Longtime Garden PA announcer Mike Walczewski is known for several signature calls exclusive to Knicks stars (i.e.: PAT-trick Ewing). But from the starting lineup announcement in Friday's season opener, he introduced Carmelo Anthony as "Melo Anthony". And it continued throughout the game, whenever the Knicks forward scored.
"They switched it up," Anthony said afterward. "That's New York. New York always has someething up their sleeves."
'Melo' of course is his nickname but also his trademark, which is most notably affiliated with Nike's Jordan Brand sneakers. Is this a marketing effort by Anthony to bring more awareness to his brand?
"It wasn't my idea," Anthony claimed after the game, "but I'll accept it."
He then said he will request one tweak to Walczewski's call.
"I'll keep it one name," he said. "I'm going to tell them just 'Melo' now."
