Stan Van Gundy Having Second Thoughts About Dwight Howard's Greatness Now?
Last season at a postgame press conference, Stan Van Gundy said there was only one thing separating Dwight Howard from a Hall of Fame career: a bigger body of work. Van Gundy said that after more years in the league, Howard would go down as an HOFer, citing the fact that he had already won three straight DPOYs and led his team to the NBA Finals in six NBA seasons with the Orlando Magic.
Now, Van Gundy has said this season that he doesn't think Dwight is the same player. Stan, like many well-acquainted with Dwight's game, can see the lack of explosiveness, the hesitation—and worst of all—the lack of confidence in himself while playing. Dwight's free throws look even worse than in Orlando, if not only because he is shooting them from a foot behind the line.
Dwight Howard will still get a max contract, and he's still the NBA's best center...playing at less than 100 percent. That's scary. But it's more a commentary on how weak today's centers are than of Dwight's greatness.
