Is it time we added an "act like a mobile browser" option to desktop browsers for bandwidth-starved environments?
The Chrome browser for Android has a useful option for pages that would otherwise display only stripped-down mobile versions of themselves: a "Request desktop site" menu command.
Is it time we went the other way and added a "Request mobile site" to desktop browsers? I'm typing this from an Amtrak regional train with pitifully overloaded WiFi, and having my browser only fetch mobile versions of pages might help a bit. That could also be useful on planes with WiFi, where the same capacity crunch often occurs and you can't even fall back on tethering.
(Safari's hidden-by-default Develop menu lets the browser impersonate an iPhone or iPad, but that only seems to work on one page at a time.)
