In a piece by the LA Times' Bill Shaikin, the outgoing president of the BBWAA, lawyers for Roger Clemens
argue that voters should not hold steroid suspicions against Roger Clemens when he goes onto the Hall of Fame ballot for the first time this winter. They make a strong case as it was the Mitchell Report that threw Clemens into the steroid pile, and the person ratting out the Rocket for that MLB-authorized review was Clemens' former strength coach, Brian McNamee. The same lawyers arguing the issue before Shaikin destroyed McNamee's credibility in court. For me personally, this is just the start of an annual headache in trying to figure out how to vote wisely on HOF candidates linked to steroids. It's preposterous to think that we know who did and did not use, with the exception of knowing that the guys who tested positive probably did. But unquestionably a lot of guys cheat and don't get caught, and there was no testing for the majority of most players' careers who have gone on the ballot or will in the next few years. Voters really have an impossible task. I'd like to see the HOF's board of directors establish a fresh set of guidelnes for voters but it seems to have no interest in modifying the process.
