Greg Maddux is about to make his debut as a pitching coach. He and Marcel Lachemann will be on the Team USA staff
put together by the manager, Joe Torre. It's quite a staff. According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the WBC coaching staff includes Dale Murphy, Larry Bowa, Willie Randolph, Gerald Perry, Maddux and Lachemann. The first list of players -- more than will be on the final roster -- will be released next week. Here's hoping that Maddux and Lachemann get a chance to coach the guys who just got Cy Young ballots, including Justin Verlander, Clayton Kershaw, R.A. Dickey, David Price, Chris Sale and Jered Weaver, among others. Six top starters can get work in the World Baseball Classic if Torre piggybacks them in games. That's the way he should do it if he wants to end USA's disappointing run in the event.
