Restoring Faith In The Human Race
Last week, former political prisoner, Nobel Peace Prize winner, Amnesty International Ambassador and Congressional Gold Medal recipient Daw Aung San Suu Kyi arrived in the United States for the first time in 20 years.
The Burmese Dissident, who like Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Nelson Mandela and others of that ilk, put her country on her back and literally helped carry it to freedom, sat down for a conversation at the Newseum in Washington DC that was live broadcast on Now w/ Alex Wagner.
It was quite an event, as you can imagine, and in the midst of the carnage from Libya to Syria and elsewhere, a welcomed reminder that while the worst of our species often seems to get the most print, there are those who literally take your breath away with their courage, integrity and unwavering sense of purpose.
Daw Suu is now using her moral authority to call for businesses taking advantage of the somewhat loosened sanctions on her homeland to behave responsibly (if only she could get them to do it here, too), and if you want to join this effort, you can here: http://goo.gl/hM1ch.
Great work by Amnesty International, as this individual case is just as important as the message it sends. As for Daw Suu, there are simply not enough superlatives in the English language for me to use regarding how I feel about her.
