Sulia is looking for outstanding engineers, designers, editors and analysts to join us as we build a real-time media company. Sulia enables users to find breaking news, tips and conversation about their favorite hobbies, political controversies, programming languages, and thousands of other niche topics. We are passionate in our belief that real-time information is transforming news and media and are working hard to be the business that organizes this information and makes it accessible to the world.

Engineering

Our team is a tight-knit group of highly talented people with backgrounds from places like Google, Microsoft, New York Times, Huffington Post and AOL.

As part of a small team, you will have the opportunity to make a big impact on core engineering and architectural challenges. You will both work independently and take ownership of your own projects and be an important contributor to our continually evolving culture.

We are looking for front-end engineers experienced in Javascript, CSS and HTML5 who are eager to build features from end-to-end including implementing the server-side portion. We use tools including jQuery, Backbone, Underscore, Handlebars, Sass, Python and Django. Experience with some of those is preferred.

Qualifications

  • The ideal team member will demonstrate passion, honesty, eagerness, empathy for users and user experience, readiness to work outside their comfort zone, humility when wrong, patience with others, fearlessness with technology. Visceral joy in abstracting and refactoring, love for hard, messy, dirty problems, and a striving for solutions that strike a healthy balance between the ideal and the pragmatic are all pluses.

Manager, Network Development

Learn about the dynamic world of New York City startups in a fast-growing digital media startup. The Network Development Manager will join a fun, hard-charging team. We need someone who's passionate about building a digital media business and who has an energetic, outgoing personality. If persuasion is your gift, we're looking for you.

Responsibilities

Network Development Managers are responsible for managing and growing the Sulia contributor network and for pitching and closing sponsorships for Sulia's channels. Core responsibilities include the following:
  • Identify, evaluate, and recruit contributors by approaching and building strong relationships with bloggers, journalists, and other professionals.
  • Identify, evaluate, and sell channel sponsorships by pitching and closing deals with SME clients.
  • Maintain an organized system for contacting and following up with potential recruits and prospective clients.
  • Assign stories to contributors and measure editorial and strategic performance.
  • Program an editorial calendar and be highly responsive to the news cycle.
  • Measure and communicate results to internal stakeholders.

Qualifications

Sulia attracts extraordinary employees from the most distinctive professional and academic backgrounds. For this position, we seek applicants with bachelors or masters degrees from top-tier colleges or universities. The following factors will strengthen an applicant's candidacy:
  • Entry level to 3+ years of experience in sales, marketing, business development, or community management.
  • Excellent understanding of major and emerging social networking, blogging, content-sharing, and checkin platforms.
  • Superior communication, interaction, and persuasion skills, both textual and conversational.
  • Existing relationships or credibility in blogging, Twitter, and Facebook communities are a plus.
  • Experience with ad sales or operations is a plus.
  • Strong, independent, technically inclined problem-solving skills.
  • Positive attitude, energy, and ability to adapt in a fast-paced environment.
