How Pat Shurmur addressed the decision to throw on third-and-1, which led to a key interception in the Browns loss:
Here are the questions and answers as Shurmur was asked about Brandon Weeden’s interception on third-and-1, from the news conference transcript:
Q: The interception, third-and-1 from the 25, you’re up seven and you threw there, why?
A: It was a bad throw. And there are reasons why it became a bad throw. It was an interception. You don’t throw an interception on third and 1.
Q: Richardson was out of the game at that point. You went with your third-down back. Why didn’t you want to hand off?
A: Are you sure? You could run it or you can throw it right? We chose to throw it there and I think it was longer than third and 1.
Q: On the third and 1 interception, was Gordon the first read? If not, would you like to see Brandon [Weeden] throw it away?
A: Yea, we don’t want to throw interceptions. We are in a situation and a part of the field there where you want to do the right thing with the football.
Q: [Brandon] Weeden’s interception in the first half. Was that the growing pains of a rookie?
A: It’s a bad decision and a nice play by the defense. I don’t care if you are a rookie and I don’t care if you’ve been in the league a long time. You don’t do that. You don’t do that. And I think we need to get off this rookie kick, we’ve got to play ball.
Q: Before that interception there was a third and one play, where Richardson was stacked up for a two yard loss and you kicked a field goal after that. Did that influence the subsequent play call?
A: We have third and 1 passes and runs and we mix it up through the game. Had we completed that third and 1 we wouldn’t be having this discussion, right? It could have been easy to say, ‘Man Pat, on the third and 1 previous to that one when Trent got bottled up, why the hell didn’t you throw it?’ Isn’t that how that works? I see you guys writing furiously, but that’s how that works. I get it and I know you’ve got to ask your questions and I know we’ve got to have stuff to talk about. So I imagine starting tomorrow we’ll do that.
