Mac troubleshooting: What do you do when your computer slows down?

One of the most frustrating aspects of using a computer is the sometimes inexplicable reasons for a sudden unexplained slowdown. Until I learned the "steps of troubleshooting", I would just flail around trying anything that came to mind.
